- Fidel Castro was best man at his wedding to Marisol in Cuba.
- In his final will and testament, he requested that his ashes be interred at the National Pantheon of Heroes of the Cuban Revolution in Havana, Cuba for his love for the island nation during his visits there. Was a good friend of Cuban president Fidel Castro and his brother, Raul Castro. In June 2004 he was decorated with the Order of Jose Marti, Cuba's highest civilian honor.
